Sterling came to NMDOG in October of 2018. He was left chained to the front door of a NM shelter in heart failure from Dilated Cardio Myopathy. He was emaciated with a masses & a giant wound on his back. He was shut down & it seemed as if he had given up. We were contacted made 911 arrangements to get take him into the NMDOG program & provide the medical care he so desperately needed. He was a quiet boy that only got excited for balls and kisses. His body condition was terrible, no muscle tone, fluid filled belly, rough, dry patchy coat, scars along his back that looked to be burns of some sort, no hair at all on his tail and a sunburned and dry nose. Over the first 2 weeks he struggled to sleep comfortably, huffing and breathing hard when he laid down and would fall if he tried to jump in or out of a car. He walked slowly everywhere, but wanted to do everything he could. He rode with his head down or curled up in the front seat of the car whenever he went anywhere. He limped really badly on his right front leg and the joints and toes of both front legs were very swollen. He would only eat chicken so we began cooking for him. As the time passed, his doctor adjusted his current meds and added new ones. He went to in for weekly check-ups and had to have fluid drained from his abdomen each time. Slowly but surely he started moving a little faster, growing hair back, regaining the spark and excitement in his eyes when he would meet people and ride in the car. Fast forward to almost 5 months later... Sterling usually wakes his foster mom up in the mornings, eats chicken (yep spoiled) AND his kidney diet dog food, patrols his yard, and then rides looking out the window with her to take our 9 year old to school where he escorts her in and says hi to everyone. He hunts for bunnies in the school yard and talks to them from the window as we drive by. He doesn't chase, just remembers where he has seen them and looks for them. He goes with his foster to work at the vet clinic and greets the clinic cat, who he has become friends with, and then makes his rounds checking on any patients that have stayed the night. Sometimes the cats dont appreciate his concern, but he tries. He has a fan club of clients, techs and doctors that LOVE him and he gets attention all day from everyone. He gets acupuncture for his arthritis in his front legs and pain injections. He jumps in and out of the car, they take short walks at lunch and in the evening. He has muscles! He has soft fur and his tail is full of hair and no longer looks like a rat tail. His scars are filling in. He sleeps soundly, snoring at the end of the humans bed every night and loves to scatter his balls all over the house and steal the 9 year old's stuffed animals and socks and put them in his bed. This is all possible because of the top notch medical care he receives & daily meds - they are keeping him alive and allowing him to feel good enough to ENJOY everyday. Sterling truly has transformed into an amazing, happy dog that loves to live and love. He has brought so much happiness to everyone he meets and it is all thanks to LoVe he receives from the NMDOG Village. Please email Info@nmdog.org to learn more about STERLING.
